Recently this picture came to my attention, though it was later revealed to be a joke, it’s inaccurate. Depression is a literal biomedical condition characterized by long periods of extreme sadness and sleepiness. This is caused by an imbalance of chemicals in your brain. Every human being has billions of little neurons just in their brain. When one is stimulated by what scientists call “action potential” an electro-chemical reaction occurs between the two neurons. When one neuron is stimulated it sends the same message to its appropriate neighboring neuron through “neurotransmitters”, or little messenger chemicals. This neurotransmitter then stimulates the neuron it was sent to and the reaction happens again and again down the line, until the initial stimulus has reached its target receptor. Such as when light hits the retina of the eye and that electrical light current is conducted into a chemical reaction which then is sent to the occipital lobe in the back of the head in a fraction of a millisecond. Depression however is a lack of stimulation. And the neurotransmitter involved is serotonin, or the feel good neurotransmitter. People who experience depression have the issue where their neurons either; don’t send enough serotonin down the line to sustain a content feeling, or the sending neuron re-uptakes the serotonin misinterpreting it as extra neurotransmitters that have not been absorbed by the receiving neuron. No one can say that depression is an excuse to not deal with something painful. Many people who have depression don’t know what is depressing them, they just can’t seem to find anything that pulls them up and out of the dumps. Honestly posts like these can be what pushes people with depression and thoughts of suicide over the edge. It’s not something that is taken lightly or should even be put out on media, serious or not.
